Decentralized Search Engine
Collector The decentralised “worker” connects to the closest GeoCore via API and performs the crawling operations. The Collector works on any system does not need a static IP address or any open ports. It is completely invisible and segregated from the frontend search service via the GeoCore. That way, Timpi can ensure that the Collector’s security is not compromised by running our software. The user can control how much of the system resources are used, pause for up to 4 hours, or even stop. In addition, the user can create schedules to allow the use of more system resources at night, for example. Communications are secured via TLS1.3, and all information is completely anonymised.
Guardian Timpi uses Guardians - distributed storage nodes- to distribute the data onto many nods that are run by the community. Our proprietary software can run on nearly any system, including Windows, Linux or even NAS solutions such as QNAP. The requirements are very moderate, and a Guardian doesn’t even need a static IP address or open any ports to the internet. That way, Timpi can ensure that the Guardian’s security is not compromised by running our software. All communications are secured via TLS1.3, and all information is completely anonymised. There is no direct connection to the Timpi website as our Information Broker is our middleware that isolates the Guardians from the frontend.
GeoCore The GeoCore Node fulfils three primary roles. First, it separates the Timpi network from the search users, and this means, at no point is it possible for an attacker to compromise a Collector or Guardian Node. The second role is handling and coordinating search requests from the webserver. The GeoCore determines whether the request can be served from the local cache or sent to the InformationBroker, which coordinates the Guardian connections. The third role is the request analysis in terms of the search term, spelling, word vector analysis, historical behaviour synonym analysis, and lexical synonym analysis. GeoCoreNodes are spread worldwide to ensure all requests are always served fast and accurately.
Ranking Keyword Ranking & Advertising Timpi is an actual relevance driven search engine that does not allow paid keyword or page ranking. In contrast to most other search engines available, Timpi ranks pages purely based on the content the page provides and how relevant it is to the search term. Using our AI technology, we do not rate the amount of information but the relevance of the content to the search term. As an advertiser, you cannot buy your rank on Timpi. This way, we can guarantee a truly independent and unmanipulated search result. However, Timpi does offer advertisement via its website, shown in line with the search results and via ad-partners.
AI The usage of AI in search engines improves the user experience dramatically. Timpi uses several AI models to help users with search terms or spelling, and we will extend the usage of AI models in the future to add even more functionality. The following AI models are currently used: Word Vector AI Word vectors are used to find synonyms for the current word by using nearest neighbours or by Word Vector defining some notion of “similarity”. Historical Behavior AI The AI looks at historical search behaviour and generates synonym candidates from that. One way to do this is to look at a “query, query, click” pattern. So if you see a search for [buy handbags], but not clicking on anything, then searching for [buy purses] and clicking on a result, the AI considers “purses” to be a synonym candidate for “handbags”. Lexical Synonyms AI These are grammatical synonyms as defined by the rules of the language.
Overwatch Monitoring and coordination are the roles of the Overwatch. Maintaining a vast distributed network of Collectors and Guardians requires an entity that governs communications and transactions and establishes trusted relationships between all entities. Overwatch initially runs within the Core but will be moved into the community as a node in a later phase.
Roadmap As the development continues, Timpi will enter the closed beta phase of the Collector in May 2022. With this, some Supporters will have the opportunity to participate and become the first Collector Nodes. Goals Goals for early-2023: Timpi aims to have a network of 1.000 Collector Nodes and 200 Guardian Nodes. The GeoCore Nodes are located on every continent to ensure a fast response time and additional resilience. With this, Timpi’s index will grow to 2 billion pages with a near-real-time refresh rate for dynamic content pages such as news or social media. The index size is not all there is, and it is also essential to advance the search algorithm and the usage of AI. A search algorithm is a complex system that allows Timpi to find, rank and return the most relevant pages for a particular search query. To be precise, the whole ranking system consists of multiple algorithms that consider various factors such as quality, relevance or usability of the page. Timpi will continue to improve its algorithm constantly to reflect market and behavioural changes
