Call of Cthulhu: calculate damage for Automatic Weapons using 7e rules
The automatic weapons mechanics in 7e Call of Cthulhu (CoC) are several pages long, and implementation can negatively affect the pace of play. This Discord bot was created to automate that process. Call of Cthulhu is a Fantasy Roleplaying Game set in H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos universe where Investigators oppose the forces of evil and the rising tides of madness. Call of Cthulhu is owned by Chaosium Inc.
An Investigator (CoC avatar) can:
?create Roll an Investigator of type: NPC, Normal, Lucky, or Pulp
?manifest list 1920s and Modern Era assault rifles, machine and submachine guns
?equip select a machine gun, submachine gun, or assault rifle to fire
?fire shoot the weapon at a Mythos monster (not at a person - we are civilized after all)
?luck list the luck cost to alter a roll and the extra damage inflicted
?roll roll percentile dice with bonus or penalty die and/or combined skill rolls
For convenience, commands are case insensitive and, in the ‘general’ channel, single letter abbreviations are allowed.
As an example of gameplay, William Barker finds himself following a jungle trail in northern Borneo when he hears the snapping of branches and strange, loud barking sounds approaching. He pulls out his Tommy gun, ?equip Thompson, braces against a tree and aims at the onrushing Mythos creature as it enters into range. His player - panicked - forgets the arcane parameters for firing his Chicago typewriter and types ?fire, The response:
fire: requires <MachineGunSkill> <Range> optional: [AmmoThisRound=0] [Adjustment=0] [monsterBuild=2] [Aiming=False] [GunnersDex=50] [Bracing=None/Rough/Prone/Structural] [MonsterArmour=0] [Spray=0]
reminds him to enter:
42 - Skill: Barker’s submachine gun skill level
15 - Range: in yards, distance to the monster determined by the Keeper
0 - Ammo: 0 let bot determine effective number of bullets, else enter a number
0 - Adjustment: no bonus or penalty e.g darkness, melee or cover
5 - Build: the fanged and clawed creature is larger than a horse - as per Keeper’s Guide
T - Aimed: Barker had time to aim, giving a bonus die to hit
50 - Dexterity of gunner, to determine Point-Blank range
Rough - Bracing of gun - as per Keeper’s Guide
2 - Armour: the fanged horror had thick skin
0 - not Spraying multiple targets else distance in yards between first and last target
So, heart pounding, William’s player enters
?fire 42 15 0 0 5 t 50 rough 2 0
and his Thompson submachine gun begins to clatter…
If William is unfortunate in his aim, the Call of Cthulhu Luck mechanic can come to his aid, and the bot can accommodate this using ?luck to reveal how much luck is needed, per volley, to increase the damage done.
As always, ?help can aid you in remembering the commands and ?help <command> gives an explanation of the options.
.
Good Hunting,
William Barker
